LATEST NEWS:

2008 PICNIC REPORT:

The Picnic has become our typical "Happy Days" and "Grease" time of year. And it is said that there are some who secretly pretend to be "sixteen" again for a day. More than 230 people enjoyed a great time at our 8th annual Picnic on Saturday, July 26 at El Dorado Park in Long Beach.

Special Thanks go to JOHN OLIVAS, '64, and his son and daughter, JONATHAN and MIA. Every year for the last 8 years, they have risen to the occasion by arriving early (4 am!) to be first at the park gate to get inside to secure our site. Yes, competition for our site is strong, but John and Jon and Mia saved the day once again.

Picnic team leaders were BERNICE RAMIREZ ARRANTS, '75; IRENE BERRONES SETTELE, '76. They were assisted by BARBARA WILLIS RAYMOND, '57. Registration Leader was CATHY SLEEPER LISKA.'65. Treasurer PEGGY BURGER MCMANN, '67, handled the big task of all financial matters.

The HPHS Student Color Guard and Sponsor, Betty Uribe, also came early to create our beautiful orange and gray balloon arch.

Class of '71 had a 37 Year Reunion on Friday evening, July 25 and then they came to the Picnic on Saturday. They took home the Best Attendance Trophy. Congratulations to their chairwomen, Patty Lunde Alvarado, Cynthia Cadiz Valadez, and Suzie Starns Morgan. Good Job, Class of 1971!

The range of classes years represented at the Picnic were from 1932 to 2000. Sisters, Betty Knesel Diedrich, 1932, and Ruth Hard Diedrich, 1934, have distinction as our oldest attendees. Madeline "Bitsy" Torres Horinouchi, 1971, came to the Picnic from Guam!

Principal Raul Correa,'89, and his wife, Darlene Gomez Correa,'90, and their family were special guests.

Other guests were HPHS College Counselor, Juanita Meraz and retired HP faculty members, Dan Reinstein and Don Myers. Many spouses and children were also warmly welcomed as Spartans for the day.

Top decades and numbers present were: 60s with 75 people, 50s with 69 people and 70s with 60 people.

Appreciation is due to all who were a part of the large crew of volunteers who helped in big and small ways to make the picnic another huge success for everyone.

REMINDER: The Picnic is always the last Saturday in July so start making your plans for Saturday, July 25, 2009.

YOU ARE INVITED TO BECOME AN HPHSAA VOLUNTEER!

You may have noticed names of many of the same people who wear several "leadership hats" in HPHSAA. It's not always by choice or design, although it is great that we have people willing to keep things going.

It all began in 2000 by a small, but devoted, team of Spartans. They did not know each other in high school, but they had a dream: To form an HPHS Alumni Association. This group became our Founders and the rest is, as they say, history.

Clearly, HPHS Alumni, no matter their graduation year, have great interest in reconnecting with classmates. However, as HPHSAA becomes increasingly well-known, serious help is needed in all areas. Many of our positions could use co-chairs. So, please contact us to find out how you can join our Spartan team.

Much of what we do can be done by email or telephone so distance is not a factor. And you can help in areas of interest according to your time available.

We especially need people with website skills and people with database skills.

Excel, Access, Powerpoint, Adobe, Photoshop, Front Page, Expressions, html, xhtml, are just a few of the skills needed.

As we start our 2008-09 term, we look forward to hearing your questions and how you might like to become involved.

We can promise that you will be rewarded in knowing you are giving something of yourself to our Alumni Association.

LIFETIME MEMBERSHIP: We've had some confusion about Lifetime Membership. Registration for the class list the website or for this email newsletter DOES NOT constitute Lifetime Membership.

Lifetime Members are those who have paid $25 for the one-time Lifetime Membership. Spartan couples receive two Lifetime Memberships for the one-time payment. Lifetime Members names are listed at this link: Lifetime Members

Lifetime Membership is voluntary but we do urge all who enjoy our website, emails and activities to join. Your contributions provide the needed funding that keeps our website open and allows us to send our emails

Of course, it is possible that your name should be listed as a Lifetime Member and we may have a mistake in our record keeping. Also, our newest Members may not yet be listed. We do apologize. Updates will be posted in the near future. Please check back soon.

If you believe that you are a paid Lifetime Member and are not listed, please send your inquiry to Database Manager, Judy Hill Mahoney, '65, Email: hphsjudy@aol.com Be sure to include your full name, class year, and the year you joined. We do want to correct any mistakes in our records. We do want to recognize all of our Lifetime Members on our website.

If you are not yet a Lifetime Member, you are invited to see this website where you can print the Membership form and mail it to us with your check. Lifetime Member Sign Up

Thanks to all Lifetime Members who have joined to support HPHSAA. .

And, of course, we welcome any additional cash contributions above the $25 level to help fund HPHSAA.

Send your donations to HPHSAA, P.O.Box 3356, Redondo Beach, CA 90277. Include your full name, class year, address, phone and email.

HPHS ALMA MATER

On her green stands HP High School,
'Neath fair skies of blue.
May she ever stand so proudly,
Glorious to view.

Lift the chorus,
Speed it onward,
Over hill and dale.
Hail to thee, our Alma Mater,
HP hail, all hail!

(verse2)

Through her halls the memories linger
Of our high school days--
Comradeship and love and courage,
Loyalty and praise.

Blest by love of all her children,
None will her betray.
See her colors proudly waving.
Hail the orange and Gray.

GO SPARTANS!
